Pang YongJie

Pang Yongjie is recognized as one of the leading Chinese artists who championed China’s “post-contemporary abstract” movement. He has shaped an unorthodox abstract figurative painting style, gaining recognition for his voluptuous and playful rendering of fleshy human figures.

On March 25, 2018, it was jointly organized by the China Association of Collectors and Chinese Contemporary Art Collection Committee to nominate Pany Yongjie as the “Contemporary Artist with the most potential for market collection.”

Pang’s oil paintings use smooth and stylized techniques, brushstrokes of color in large areas. The dispelling of the traditional interpretation meaning of the character image, the magnificent and modern technique, with the concrete image of the soul and the writing of human nature. True, direct, frank, brave and natural approach, resonating with the viewer’s soul. To look at his art is to bask in the sunlight of conceptual art. The feel of simplicity, broad-mindedness, purity, and ethereal elegance…

Pang stated that art is a kind of religious sentiment, especially for people like him who live by art, perhaps even as salvation. Every day’s work is a prayer, and through this process of self-improvement, he perceives contradiction and conflict, race and class, society, life, the sky, and the earth. “I express my feelings through art in a minimal and simple way . . . I’m trying to achieve a certain feeling for when someone stands in front of my artwork, there will be an illusion that makes people forget the cumbersome, instead move closer to the soul, quiet space or thought. To enter into a broader connection to the world, deriving compassion.

In Pang’s oil paintings, you frequently see a female image. Jie’s minimalistic brushwork is abstract and simple, of images very close to those of the plump ladies in Tang Dynasty, China: they have plump breasts, big bottoms and red lips. Their posture is relaxed, the look is lazy, and there is an indescribable relief under the ambiguous warm orange tone. The viewer is surrounded by these lazy "ladies", they can’t help but sway in their hearts, relax their minds, and smile knowingly.
