Huang Gang
黃鋼 1961年生於北京,是當代中國最具文化辨識度的混合媒介藝術家與雕塑家。他畢業於中央工藝美術學院(現清華美院),不僅深耕繪畫,在立體雕塑領域亦享有盛譽。
黃鋼被視為「後文革時期」與「新東方主義」的代表人物。他成功將中國傳統符號(如西藏經版、紅漆、皮箱)轉化為當代藝術語言,曾在倫敦、巴黎及香港舉辦多次個展,是國際當代藝術展覽中的常客。
黃鋼的作品被譽為「沈默的史詩」,其厚重的東方文化底蘊並非流於表面的符號堆砌,而是深植於材質的歷史性與哲學的儀式感。他擅長直接使用帶有百年歲月痕跡的實物進行創作,最著名的便是西藏古經版、明清老皮箱與老紅漆。其雕塑作品多以金屬、木材與漆藝結合,展現出一種厚重的歷史張力。

Huang Gang, born in Beijing in 1961, is one of contemporary China's most culturally recognizable mixed-media artists and sculptors. A graduate of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts (now the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University), he has not only cultivated a deep expertise in painting but also earned acclaim in the field of three-dimensional sculpture.
Huang Gang is regarded as a leading figure of the “post-Cultural Revolution era” and “New Orientalism.” He has successfully transformed traditional Chinese symbols—such as Tibetan prayer blocks, red lacquer, and leather suitcases—into contemporary artistic language. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in London, Paris, and Hong Kong, and is a regular presence in international contemporary art exhibitions.
Huang Gang's works are hailed as “silent epics.” His profound Eastern cultural foundation transcends superficial symbolism, instead rooted in the historical weight of materials and the ritualistic philosophy embedded within them. He excels at directly incorporating century-old artifacts into his creations, most famously Tibetan ancient prayer blocks, antique Ming and Qing dynasty suitcases, and aged red lacquer.
